On the Toral Rank Conjecture and formality

Leopold Zoller (München)

Abstract: We give an introduction to the Toral Rank Conjecture. It was posed by Steve Halperin roughly 40 years ago and states that if a compact r-dimensional torus acts freely on a finite CW-complex X, then the sum of all Betti numbers satisfies dim H*(X,Q) ≥ 2r. Using formality and related concepts we explore connections to other conjectures and prove the Toral Rank Conjecture in special cases.
