SPP1590 Workshop 12.12.-13.12.2019

Geographic spaces for evolution: from lattices to graphs to continuum

12.12.-13.12.2019
Begin: ~09.00 h (Arrival 11.12.2019)
End: ~14.30 h

Description:

Spatial populations are frequently modelled using discrete geographic spaces like $\Z^d$. For many applications in biology, and other disciplines, this is unsatisfactory and one needs to pass to more general graphs, giving up that way the underlying group structure.

Often it is necessary to pass to continuum space like $\R^d$ or the space of graphons. Such extensions are necessary not only to analyze quantities like the type composition, but also to extract universal patterns in the behaviour of the populations on large time and space scales. Here the universality classes are represented by the continuum space limit after an appropriate time-space-rate rescaling. In that context one also want to analyze the genealogies of the continuum space limit, which give rise to technical and conceptual challenges, via a basic tool in this context: the Brownian web.

The workshop aims at bringing together different lines of development, combining the insights and the connections that several participants of the SPP gained during a special activity during July and August 2017 at NU Singapore. We are also aiming at highlighting differences in techniques, and to discuss pro’s and con’s of the continuum space approach versus discrete methods.

SPP1590 Workshop 25.03.-27.03.2019

Spatial population models: From configurations to genealogies and back

25.03.-27.03.2019
Begin: ~13.30 h
End: ~14.30 h

Description:

The workshop focuses on the typical spatial and non-spatial models in population genetics.

The goal of the workshop is to focus on a systematic treatment of genealogies in those models,
use genealogies to derive and explain facts in configurations of type frequencies, sizes etc. or
to use informations about the latter to learn more about the genealogies.

Some talks are planned to particularly address the issue of perspectives for further research
on the topic in the future; another slot is for four talks of younger scientists associated with the SPP.

SPP1590 Workshop 19.03.-21.03.2018

Genealogies, lines of descent and duality in population models

19.03.-21.03.2018
Begin: ~14.00 h
End: ~15.00 h

Description:

The workshop focuses on the description of genealogies and lines of descent in the standard models of population genetics, which involve resampling, mutation, selection, recombination and migration (or some of these). The role of duality will be explored. The goal is to present the current research within the SPP1590, to communicate in a systematic way some key concepts and to learn about what happens internationally.

For this reason there will be a minicourse on genealogies and their evolution based on metric measure spaces and a survey talk on the behaviour of lines of descent. Some foreign speakers are invited. Finally a number of talks by SPP members are invited.

Confirmed Speakers:

Matthias Birkner (Survey talk – ancestral lines) – Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz
